Vancouver 2010 Opening Ceremonies

The Opening ceremonies of the winter Olympics have began!  It started February 12, 2010 and will go until Feb 28th, 2010!!  The broadcasting started 6pm Pacific time, where unfortunately I was still at work.  I finnished up about an hour in and headed home to get ready to go downtown.

I was happy that although I missed a lot of the live streaming of the opening ceremonies; I was fortunate to be able to see the dress rehearsal of the opening ceremonies.  It was a lot of fun to see all the visual effects on the screens and just be there. I enjoyed the dancing and singing!  It was really cool how the skiers & snowboarders were flying in the air.  I think my favorite parts would have to be the giant polar bear or the snowboarder who unexpectedly slides down.   It was so much fun to watch and be part of.  Going down to Robson square was awesome as well. Seeing the ceremonies on the large screen with hundreds of people.

After the games I went along Granville street along with thousands of other people.  I heard O Canada sung several times and took lots of random pictures.  I even managed to get into Pop Opera for a bit and then headed back out to the streets! What a wonderful start to the Vancouver 2010 Olympics!!

Vancouver 2010 Torch Relay

leave a comment »

I’ve been waiting about 5 years for this event to finally come and now here it is in Vancouver. Our 2010 Winter Olympics and it’s awesome!!!

On February 11, 2010 just one day before the opening they brough the olympic torch relay, close to my home.  After more then 100 days on the road I finally got to see it.  It came by Burnaby just before noon and I managed to slip away for 30minutes with some co-workers to see it.  To my surprise the streets were filled with people dressed in red or with Canada Flags. It was a fun experience to see everyone happy & cheering Canada on.  We saw police drive by, followed by the RBC truck and the Coca Cola truck.  They were just dancing and having a great time.  Finally we got to see the torch pass by. It was brief, but it was extended a bit as there was a passover between the flames.  It was nice to see everyone having so much fun.

Later in the evening I went over to see the torch again as I was down by the Burrard Bridge and I heard Michael Buble was going to be carrying it some where there.  Little to my surprise I was at the wrong end of the Bridge.  I assumed I was really close and so I jogged/ran  beside the flame along with my dad & hundreds of people.  It was so much fun just passing all these people and following the torch.  I kept thinking he’d show up in the next pass but to my surprise It was about 5 passes later after the Burrard Street bridge that I finally saw him off of Pacific under the Granville Bridge.  It was a lot of fun, and an experience at that.  I’m glad to know that apparently I can chase 5 passes by myself. lol  I saw Michael Buble for about 1 minute and then headed over to David Lam park to hear some music outside.

So much fun, a wonderful night. I’m so glad the Olympics are here tomorrow 🙂

Stanley Cup

leave a comment »

It has been a while since I wrote but I realized I can’t not write when so much is happening around me.  Almost 2 weeks ago now on February 7th they brought the Stanley Cup into my branch at Brentwood mall.   It was so surprised that we were able to have the Stanley cup here in Burnaby so I made sure to volunteer.

I woke up quite early actually and made sure to get ready for the opening.  We had honoured guest Bret Hedican join us. Champion of the 2006 Hurricanes Stanley cup.  He was also in the Canucks previously and is married to Kristi Yamaguchi. the american figure skater  & 1992 Olympic Champion in women’s singles.  I was really excited for the official Stanley Cup to come to Vancouver. I’ve never seen it before so it was a lot of fun to go and volunteer for the media control.

Bret Hedican was extremely nice and signed autographs for all of the staff. I took a picture with him and he let me put on his huge ring.  It was so much fun. A great experience, so glad I was there!
